The producer's instinct

DINO DE LAURENTIIS (1919-2010) Italian film producer. Born in the province of Naples, he grew up selling spaghetti produced by his father, then studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He produced some of the most important movies of the post Second World War times, acclaimed neorealist films like Riso Amaro (1946) starring Silvana Mangano whom he married. He often collaborated with producer Carlo Ponti. In 1976, De Laurentiis relocated to the USA where he set up studios, eventually creating his own studio De Laurentiis Entertainment Group (DEG). De Laurentiis also produced the first Hannibal Lecter film, Manhunter (1986). He passed on adapting Thomas Harris' sequel, The Silence of the Lambs, but produced the two follow-ups, Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002), a remake of Manhunter. He also produced Hannibal Rising (2007), which tells the story of how Hannibal becomes a serial killer. He was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievements in 2003. He received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. De Laurentiis died on 10 November 2010 at his residence in Beverly Hills. Her daughter Raffaella, and nephew Aurelio are also film producers; his son Federico, another producer, died in a plane crash in 1981 (Dino's movie Dune is dedicated to him).

De Laurentiis also made several adaptations of Stephen King's works during this time, including The Dead Zone (1983), Cat's Eye (1985), Silver Bullet (1985) and Maximum Overdrive (1986); Army of Darkness (1992) was produced jointly by De Laurentiis, Robert Tapert and the movie's star Bruce Campbell.

OMAR SHARIF (1932) Egyptian actor who has starred in Hollywood films including Lawrence of Arabia, Doctor Zhivago and Funny Girl. He has been nominated for an Academy Award and has won two Golden Globe Awards. Among his numerous awards is the Career Golden Lion and the Plastic Lion - Leone del Pubblico from the Venice Film Festival in 2003, receiving special acclaim for his role in the French-language film adaptation of the novel Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran, as a Muslim Turkish merchant who becomes a father figure for a Jewish boy.
